you're not being picky. anything NOT a single malt is utility.
that being said ... for a decent bang/buck, i dig the stuff that the Isle of Jura does.
i've had their Superstition (16 year); i find it to be a bit more peppery than their tasting notes (despite the Oak aging, oddly), but it's a phenomenal easy-Sunday-evening-rolling-into-Monday swig.
after the initial pepper (which might just be a hyper-sensitivity on my end), it's smooth, it's smokey, and has a lingering sweetness.
here are their notes (http://www.isleofjura.com/whisky/range/detail.cfm?contentid=228); it'll run you about $45 bucks a bottle from the local store, though i've never seen it on the shelf of a bar.
another one i've really enjoyed recently was the Glenlivet 15-year reserve ... notably for its French Oak aging. so it was super smooth, very nutty, and had some vanilla to it. (http://www.theglenlivet.com/15yearold/)
that one cost me about $58 for the bottle, and again ... alas ... i've never seen it on the shelf at a bar.
maybe i just hang out at the wrong bars.

If you see me at a trade show or friendly get together, I'm rarely without a glass of it in my hand.

If I'm at a nice (high class) bar where the bartender has both time and skill, I order it as an Old Fashioned:
http://www.drinkboy.com/Cocktails/Recipe.aspx?itemid=121
If I'm not at a nice bar (and don't order a beer), I order it neat.
I do qualify for the "bonus points". Those who know me, know that they can always find a glass of rye when they're invited over to my home. I go the extra mile and have special thick glasses that live in the freezer until they're ready to be christened with the marvelous drink.

I'm a simple guy. Jim, Jack and Johnnie are all I need!
Sorry, it's not a single malt though.

The reason I went out of my way to buy it was their advertising campaign a few years back. I am very rarely influenced by advertising; but, in this case I felt that any company so public spirited as to decorate the world with huge billboards featuring pin up girls deserved my support.
Unfortunately I could find no copies or photos of the billboards on line. They featured Ms. Claus, in my opinion showing that Santa had earned a trophy wife.

The light colour and mild smell with a hint of pine won't screw you're nose up, but it's after you swallow that the good stuff begins. First you will feel the full peaty flavour at the back of you're throat, then there's a slow burn in you chest as 12 years of matured pure malt whiskey starts to do what it's supposed to do.
This Whiskies range is a a collection which includes the oldest Scotch whisky ever bottled, the most expensive Scotch whisky ever sold and, of course "the" whisky voted the World's Best Single Malt Scotch Whisky.
I would love to drink

Which scotch is your favourite? Why?
It has to be a real scotch whiskey such as Talisker, Oban, Cragganmore, Laphroaig, or Lagavulin. It should really be a single malt just to be picky.
Bonus points if you took the name(s) from a bottle in your bar.
No answer that is *not* tagged scotch will be considered.

• Jura is one I haven't heard of. Not sure we can get it in Ontario but I'll have to check it out (once the Laphroaig is done)

Not really a "scotch" but a very fine whiskey. As a kid I had plenty of those purple bags from my dad. Stored my D&D dice in them.

I recognize my error now. While composing my answer, I had a glass in my hand. As a result of that, my answer may have been skewed :)

I don't drink a lot of single malt (it has an unfortunate tendency to aggravate heartburn), but I'm pretty fond of Ardbeg (cf http://www.whisky.com/brands/ardbeg_brand.html). Like drinking through a mass of burned peat, but actually pretty smooth, after the first sip numbs your tongue. :-) I'm currently out, but i think I may have some Laphroaig in the cabinet somewhere. Another good one.

I don't drink much Scotch being more of into beer and rum. However, the one Scotch that I have gone out of my way to purchase and found that I liked is Cutty Sark. It is a classic blended Scotch not a single malt. The reason I went out of my way to buy it was their advertising campaign a few years back. I am very rarely influenced by advertising; but, in this case I felt that any company so public spirited as to decorate the world with huge billboards featuring pin up girls deserved my support.
