Tesla worked for Edison, before Tesla produced his work on the alternating current induction motor. Edison apparently utilized the genius of Tesla when they worked together, bolstering Edisons' works, but not crediting Tesla. They parted ways, with a rift between them, when Tesla brought forth his findings about AC electricity and the ability to distribute it, ideas which Edison vigorously denounced as impossible, or at very least impractical. Edison claimed it would never work. He also stood to lose much, in his own eye at least, and possibly from corporate America, if DC electricity was replaced with AC.
There is an excellent movie that covers this, starring the great Orsen Wells as J.P. Morgan and Peter Bozovic as Tesla. It is called "The Secret of Nikola Tesla - The Movie", and there is a good 10 minute clip on youtube, which you'll find easily if you search for the movie title.

I would suggest you listen to the podcast "Stuff You Should Know" from Howstuffworks.com on the subject. They did a great job talking about the working relationship between Edison and Tesla and Westinghouse. It aired June12th. I also attached a link to the article from hsw about how Tesla changed electricity use forever. http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?i=55579194&id=278981407
