I think it is because at it's root Science-Fiction is about philosophy. Almost all good sci-fi makes certain assumptions (the spectacular new ways of living, devices, etc) and then has their character answer the question: What am I supposed to do?

This has contributed to a lack of science fiction because nobody really wants to call what another does wrong, and determining right from wrong is the heart of answering the question above.

Sci-fi is also about hope. Hope for things to be different than they are today, better in a sense, at least according to someone, and that can be a hard leap to make.

The thing about science fiction is that it is ever-changing, branching out in so many different ways that some people don't recognize it for what it is.

What do you find to be "good" science fiction? If you are a fan of Golden Age science fiction, you might be drawn to space operas or perhaps modern "hard sci-fi."

If you're a fan of New Wave... well, old Harlan Ellison's still kicking. But the best thing for fans of the New Wave is to read New Wave... there's not much else like it.

But in my opinion, the best new Sci-fi is the genre breaking stuff like Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon, and The Baroque Cycle.

There's a lot of bad stuff though, you're right about that. And if I had to say why, I'd blame it on stagnation and Star Wars. Star Wars set a formula that itself was derived from the cheaper space operas of the first half of the 20th Century and the more cliche' mythological archetypes of human history.

But its popularity can not be denied. So, it became a standard for new Sci-fi, and as the old saying goes, Garbage in, Garbage out.

Years of Science Fiction readership and a bit of opinionatedness.
