re kill ratio

There was an SF story about a pilot in a fancy jet fighter who got knocked back in time to WW1. He went up to fight a wing of enemy WW1 fighters and saw nothing on his radar and landed very disappointed. But everyone was cheering because he had blown the entire flight out of the sky

now, I know that TMTC... means, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." but who wrote that story, and what is its title? (Sounds a bit like the premise of _The Final Countdown_ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080736/

any ideas?

Hi!

The book you are referring to is called The Hawk among the Sparrows by Dean McLaughlin.

McLaughlin won a 1969 Hugo Award for Best Novella for this story.

http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/m/dean-mclaughlin/hawk-among-sparrows.htm: In "Hawk Among the Sparrows," a fighter jet carrying nuclear-missiles is thrown back through time and pitted against World War I airplanes. What chance do wood and cloth planes have? You'll be surprised.
Asker's Rating:
• fantastic, thanks. did you just happen to know that, or do you have a secret "look up a book by its plot" link?

Thanks! I am so excited ... you are the first person to give me credit for a best answer (I only signed up yesterday and was a bit sceptical at first).

In reply to your question, no, I didn't know the answer straight off, and no, no secret link. Just some patient Googling :)

Thanks again!

not sure about the story you asked about but there is a TWILIGHT ZONE episode with the same concept but it was a tank unit that went back to fight the indians.

Ah yes. I happened to hear that episode re-done as a radio play about a year ago.

I don't recognize the particular story; but, I do recognize the genre. I have never liked it or seen much point in it myself. However, since you are interested I thought I'd point out the earliest example that I'm aware of which is in Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court" (1889). In that example the battle is between gatling guns and knights in armor.
