According to several articles I have read in the past and to a bit of knowledge, the only reason why lightning cuases things to 'explode' is becasue of the high energy and how quickly it can heat something up. a COMPLETELY dry tree MAY not exploded, although if it does have some moisture, the extremely fast change in temperature could cause it to explode.

If the tree doesn't have abundant amounts moisture will the electrons from the lightening strike, flow over the tree, instead of boiling the water in the tree and causing an explosion?
