According to US History.org the flag was created, after the revolutionary war, with 13 stars on a field of blue to represent the new union, like a constellation in the sky. According to WikiAnswers the 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies.
Truth or Fiction.com also dispels the rumors that 13 stands for anything except the colonies.
