It's not considered to be a particle, per se. Strictly speaking, it's a phenomena for which no explentation currently exists.
If it's a field of force, like some sort of meta-gravity, then, like all fields of force, there's supposed to be an associated "particle of exchange" encapsulating the properties - like charge, mass, momentum, etc. - that are being passed from one body to another via that field of force, so if there's a dark-matter field, then there's a dark-matter particle of exchange.

Why is dark matter considered a particle? What properties does a particle have?
Particles have mass, measurable energy output, and empirical evidence.
If Dark matter is a string than it must be a higher vibrating string.

String theory likewise can be used to predict the existence of black holes.
Is string theory the grand unifying theory of everything?
Science often is unprovable at first. The theory of relativity was proven by the bending of light around the sun, as predicted by Einstein. The theory was credible, long before, evidence was capable of proving it valid.
