It promotes a more scientific, skeptical view of our universe, with conclusions drawn from facts, not speculation. That's just the nature of scientists and academics and their work.
The trouble is that many people (in and out of the debate) keep forgetting that evolution is simply a theory, not truth. There's just a greater deal of evidence supporting it cogently than there is for the alternatives.
