The plain indians wear head dress symbolizing a bird. The bird feathers signifies bravery and you can't just wear it, you have to earn it either in a battle or as a act of bravery doing sopmething to defend the tribe, save a life or scalp an enemy.
It is not just an ornament.

The plain indian tribes include the Blackfoot, Arapaho, Assiniboine, Cheyenne, Comanche, Crow, Gros Ventre, Kiowa, Lakota, Lipan, Plains Apache , Plains Cree, Sarsi, Sioux, Shoshone, and Tonkawa

The warrior wears a head dress called the trailer warbonnet ,a headdresse with single or double rows of eagle feathers descending in a long 'tail' all the way to the ground, while the chief wears what is called a halo warbonnets which is a headdress with eagle feathers fanned out around the face in an oval shape.
