Mohamed Altoumaimi and his Bernoulli simplified equation.
In May 2009, Mohamed Altoumaimi, a 16 year old Iraqi student who lives in Sweden, solved a mathematic problem that has eluded scholars during 300 hundred years. He spent 4 months revising a math puzzle, the Bernoulli Numbers, and came up with a formula which simplifies these sequence of calculations introduced by Swiss mathematician Jacob Bernoulli during the 17th century.
The Bernoulli Numbers introduced by its author were posthumously published in the book "Ars Conjectandi" in 1713, although it is believed the sequence may have been also published a year earlier by Seki Kōwa from Japan, in his work "Katsuyo Sampoi".
Bernoulli Numbers are a sequence of rational numbers with intimate connections to number theory. The boy followed a unique method for solving the problem, he used some of his own approach and not the easiest possible way, he followed a long stretch to come up with the solution, which is hard evidence he had achieved all by himself.
Altoumaimi presented his home work to his high school teachers in Falu Frigymnasium, Sweden. None of them thought the formula worked, so he went to Uppsala University to let them check his paper. After careful consideration the professors found his work was correct and offered him a place at Uppsala. Altoumaimi, who wants some day to be a researcher in physics and mathematics, is currently taking advance classes in these fields.
