The city was built by the Mayan and was built between 600 and 900 AD. The City was built in the Puuc style using Limestone pyramids using Stucco as wall coverings.
The temple area .
They were invaded by the Toltec people that were named Tollen which translates as "place of the reeds". they lived about 50 miles from Mexico City. The Toltec invaders set up their Yucatan capital city in Chichén Itzá and the building and growth declined. Yet Ixmal continued to be occupied and participated in the League of Mayapán. When the League of Mayapán ended in about 1450 the City was abandoned.
