What proportion of the human body is hydrogen?

There's hydrogen in the water and in the organic compounds that make up the human body. What proportion does it constitute?

The answer can be in terms of the proportion of atoms, or the proportion of the mass, or ideally both.

This might be trivial if you happen to know where to look, or very hard to work out if you have to do it from first principles!

For extra brownie points, if you happen to know, the proportions of all the major elements would be interesting.

In terms of mass, hydrogen accounts for 10%.

You'll find the proportions of all other elements in the article linked bellow.

Excellent! Saves me trying to calculate if from the table nativenerd found!

Thank you.

Thank you for the rating, philipy, and for your comment, too. I can appreciate some feedback at this early stage - I'm still learning here, even when I answer questions!

You're welcome interzone.

To get a 5 star rating, (what the system calls "Above and beyond"), the answer would maybe have given both the proportion of atoms, the proprtion of mass, and mentioned the additional interesting fact from the source that CHON accounts for more than 95% of the mass. That along with pointing to credible sources for the info would be to my mind a top-drawer Mahalo answer.

Of course 4 star means it was already an excellent answer that I am fully satisfied with! :)

"Ok, here it goes. Hydrogen, oxygen and carbon make up about 99% of the average human. I'm going to cheat a little and leave out the other 1%, which is made up of trace elements (that is, stuff there's only a trace of in the body). Then, let's assume an average adult weighs 70 kilograms. Be sure to keep in mind that the following numbers are based on the number of atoms, not percent of body weight (by weight we are mostly oxygen). A 70 kg body would have approximately 7*1027 atoms. That is, 7 followed by 27 zeros:

7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

Of that, 4.7*1027 would be hydrogen atoms, which have one proton and one electron each. Another 1.8*1027 would be oxygen, which has 8 protons, 8 neutrons and 8 electrons. There are 7.0*1026 carbon atoms, which have 6 protons, 6 neutrons and 6 electrons. Now, let's add that all up:"

Nice find there. Thanks.

You didn't work out the proportion, but it's easy to calculate from the table.

I see it's 4.22 / 6.71 = 62.9%.

Maybe I'll work out the proportions by mass later. That would take a bit longer. :)

About 62% just from water.

Sounds like we're all very combustible! It's a wonder there are no more instances of spontaneous human combustion than there are.
