2002 EV Challenge.

Formerly known as the EV Challenge, the now named SMARTT Challenge, is the US premier alternative fuel education program that provides a holistic approach to the use of alternative fuels and technologies with environmental education.

The EV Challenge (for Electric Vehicle) was first established in 1993. Is an innovative educational program for middle and high school students centered on building electric-powered cars. Today it has become into the largest high school and middle school academic electric vehicle competition in the US, and since 2007, it changed under a new name "Students Making Advancements in Renewable Transportation Technology" or SMARTT. First spreading thru the east and south, it now has turned nationwide:

• Middle school students build and compete with model solar-powered cars.
• High school students convert full-sized gasoline-powered vehicles into electric vehicles. It's a complete conversion project.

Team entries are placed in any of the three vehicle classes and are judged under various parameters:

• Vehicle Design
• Range
• Autocross Performance
• Oral Presentations
• Website
• Troubleshooting
• School Initiative.

Students learn about electric technology throughout the year and then come together for a two-day finale. In addition to building the electric vehicle, high school students compete in autocross (speed and agility) and range events, vehicle design, oral presentations, troubleshooting, Web site design, and community involvement.

The EV Challenge gets a majority of its funding from corporate sponsors and government organizations, including Advanced Energy Corporation, CP&L/Progress Energy, Duke Power, Dominion Virginia Power, the NC Energy Office, the NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the EPA.

CP&L started the EV Challenge program in North Carolina. The program then spread to South Carolina, Florida, Virginia, West Virginia, and Georgia, and is now spreading nationwide. Thousands of students have participated in the EV Challenge.

Topsail High School, from Hampstead, NC, entered the 2004 EV Challenge with this Ford Ranger electric pick-up winning the truck´s Vehicle Design Class and coming second for High School Overall.

In October 2007, the EV Challenge became the SMARTT Challenge competition. The new program expanded its focus to include additional alternative transportation fuels and technologies.
