A cyclone in the Northern Hemisphere is more commonly referred to as a Hurricane. The names are only based on the region and refer to the same basic type of weather event. While severe low pressure systems can form over land, they cannot gain enough strength to form a cyclone. A cyclone gains its strength when it passes over areas of hot water with no interference from land or other storm systems.
