The question is mainly one of faith. If you believe God created the universe and mankind, the purpose of the universe may be no more or less than to provide mankind the arena in which to grow and explore God's creation, while worshiping Him.
If you are a strict materialist, you may believe there is no purpose to the universe other than to exist, and even that makes the assumption there is a purpose at all. That purpose, if it exists, would then have no relation to mankind beyond the fact that without a universe in existence, mankind would not exist.

Cognitive perception produces experience. Experience produces wisdom. How do we learn? We learn by comparing contrasts: pain and pleasure, hungry and feast, good and evil, ignorance and knowlege, and joy and sorrow. We think because we have the able to choose, free will, and to act.

Your question assumes the universe has a final purpose, and at least implies that mankind is significant enough to have the hypothetical purpose of the universe related to it. Neither of these assumptions has been established.

Telelogical reasoning suggests that an object must exist for a purpose. Eyes exist to: see, navigate, linquistic association and decision making, create emotional feedback, provide stronger levels of neural stimulation than the other senses, and assist in recall.
I like your analogy of God. A son desires to become like his father. The purpose of a boy is to someday take the place of his father in a genealogical link between father and son.
What would be the teleological purpose of the Universe?

Teleological reasoning is not necessarily valid. What is the purpose of a rock on the moon's surface? How about on a moon in a star system that will never be visited by any intelligence?
