Hadrons are subatomic particles made up of quarks bound together by the strong force as mediated by gluons. In terms of quantum chromodynamics, hadrons are colorless, which requires them to be made up of either three quarks of different colors (baryons, which include protons and neutrons) or a quark-antiquark pair with corresponding color and anticolor (mesons, including pions and kaons). Quantum mechanics describes the nature of hadrons and explains their behavior, as verified by the breakdown products of hadrons in particle-accelerator experiments.
