Atom is greek for uncutable, but we have since learned that an atom is composed of electrons, protons, and neutrons which are in turn composed of quarks and according to string theory, tiny vibrating strings. As the basic building blocks of matter that are obviously very small, the name atom has also been applied to other small items such as the atom processor made by intel.
