No carvings or hieroglyphs are present on the surface of the Vatican Obelisk.
The typical Egyptian Obelisk was worshipped as the dwelling place of the sun-god. According to the Jesuit scholar Athanasius Kircher, the ancient viewed the obelisk as the digitus solis, or "Finger of the Sun".
The shapes of the ancient Egyptian pyramid and obelisk were derived from natural phenomena related with the sun-god Ra, Egyptians greatest deity. The pyramid and obelisk would have been inspired by astronomical phenomena connected with the sunrise and the sunset: the zodiacal light and sun pillar respectively.

The carving on the Vatican Obelisk base reads in Latin: "Christus Vincit, Christus Regnat, Christus Imperat. Christus ab omni malo plebem suam defendat." (Christ is the victor, Christ is king, Christ is the ruler, may Christ defend his people from all evil). The Obelisk is topped by a bronze cross. On The east and west sides are inscribed exorcist formulas.
