According to Edward O. Wilson's Nature revealed: selected writings, 1949-2006, Formica Omnivora (omnivorous ant) is the name given by Carolus Linneaus in 1758 to a Jamaican house-pest ant. There have been attempts to link it to the Hispaniolan plague ant, and to the fire ant. However, the paucity of descriptive details in Linneaus' 6-line description makes it impossible to definitively identify this ant today.
