Common Bean or Phaseolus vulgaris.

The wild bean origins had been inconsistently followed. Scientifically known as Phaseolus aborigineous or P. aborigienous var. hondurensis, there is no consensus on how the variety should be named. With the actual inadequate state of our knowledge on the relationship between the North and Southamerican wild beans with the domesticated cultivars Phaseolus vulgaris.

The wild types grow in isolated regions troughout a disjunct rage from west central Mexico through Central America along the estern slopes of the Andes all the way down to northwestern Argentina.

According to scientists, seems that at least two different groups of domesticated Phaseolus vulgaris evolved, one in the Mexico-Guatemala region (Mesoamerica) and one in Southamerican Andes. Sustantial questioning regarding the common bean origin still remains.

By the most part. You have to consider that CIAT (International Center of Tropical Agriculture) located in Palmira, Colombia, houses the largest collection of bean varieties in the world... around 15 million!

So, it is fair to think that not only Phaseolus vulgaris but also Phaseolus lunatus L., Phaseolus coccineus L. or Phaseolus polyanthus L. among others are to be found in many countries as well.

The putative center of origin for Phaseolus vulgaris, or the common bean is in mesoamerica, the area now currently known from central Mexico to Nicaragua.
