* By 1990, half of Nicaragua's work force was estimated to be unemployed or underemployed.
* Great percentage of Inadequate household.
* Demographics of the country, nearly half of all Nicaraguans are under 15 years of age.
* Incremental privatisation is reducing the services used and essentially excluding the poor who can least afford services through market provision.
* Future prospects for poverty reduction are increasingly being called into question by economic growth projections.
* Infant mortality is on the rise.
* Nation's external debt at US$6.6 billion is six times the size of its GDP.
* Economy is extremely dependent on external help to avert social, political and economic crisis.
* Natural resource exploitation has resulted in environmental damage and degradation
* Severe impacts of mining on the nation's ecosystems.
* Increase in sedimentation of bodies of water, thus diminishing the provision of water.
