What is the purpose of the Substrate?

Can other nanomaterials be used to function as the substrate?

Completely natural, heat treated, and bug free. Safe for all reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates. 1/2" to 1" thick is...layer for burrowing animals. Keep bedding dry for desert dwelling animals and for tropical animals spray for humidity.
