I think the head is wearing a cap, it is not a helmet and i would agree with you that it could be a fisherman instead of a roman soldier. The only other Europeans who would have visited the Americas before Colombus would be the Norseman or Vikings. From the pictures i have seen the cap is just covering the hair a helmet would certainly cover more of the head and also the forehead.

Was the carving of "The Little Roman" head of Calixtlahuaja, one of a fisherman?
The carving remains me of a fisherman rather than a soldier. Do you think the man is wearing a helmet or a cap?
