Instead explaining with words and diagrams how to sail a boat, why don“t you take a look at this short series of videos that will better explain the intricacies of sailing. Since the initiation on sailing will just take a weekend, we can call this basic introductory series: "Sailing 101 or Sailing for dummies".

Here the lessons by sailing expert Tyler Pierce from the Offshore Sailing School at Liberty Landing in Jersey City, New Jersey. (Remember, this are just the basics on two minute videos. Advance techniques and complex maneuvering will fill other video chapters)

The best way to learn is to be taught by someone who sails, but in very very basic terms, you always need to keep your sail catching the wind and use the rudder to steer. It's easy to sail with the wind at your back, but sailing against the wind requires you to basically sail back and forth, catching the wind on the side of the boat and angling slightly into it - you go back and forth getting a litttle closer to the goal each time. Sailing a small boat (8 to 10 feet) is pretty easy and you should be able to pick it up in an hour or so.

If you watch the vidoes provide by pixelsilva, the instructor gives a easy to understand overview of sailing. However, I would want an expert onboard while trying to navigate a sailboat for the first time.
