Okay im having trouble in math (algebra) can you explain this to me? Please:

Evaluate 7+4(8-x) when x is -2.

and why do you only multiply 4x10? why not 7x10. or both???

thankyou.

Alright, the original problem reads this: Evaluate 7+4(8-x) when x is -2.

The first step is to substitute -2 for x because we were told that x=2. The problem now reads: 7+4(8--2).

Now, there is no such thing as subtraction. It is really the adding of negative numbers. A negative number is the opposite of a positive number. --2 is the opposite of the opposite of 2. Because its the opposite of the opposite, its really just the original number, which is 2. Because of this, we change -- to +, since we are now just adding 2. The problem now reads: 7+4(8+2)

Next, we solve the problem within the parenthesis: 7+4(8+2=10) The problem now reads: 7+4(10).

Now for your question. We multiply 4 by 10 because writing the 4 next to the parenthesis indicates that it is to be distributed to all of the numbers in the parenthesis. Since we only have one number in the parenthesis, this process is just regular multiplication. We do not do anything with the 7 yet because the plus sign indicates that it is to be added to the result of 4(10). You always multiply and divide before you add. The problem now reads: 7+40.

Finally, you add the two numbers to get the final answer. The answer is 47.

I hoped that helped. Its sometimes hard to explain these things without being there in person.

Multiplication takes precedence over addition unless parantheses are involved. There should be a section in the intro of your math book that tells you the order of operations. So, you don't necessarily work the problem from left to right.

Here are the rules for basic algebra:

Rule 1: First perform any calculations inside parentheses.
Rule 2: Next perform all multiplications and divisions, working from left to right.
Rule 3: Lastly, perform all additions and subtractions, working from left to right.

I taught Algebra to 8th graders last year so maybe I can help!

First, you need to know that when you see a problem that says "evaluate when x is whatever" you should plug that in for x.

Since x = -2, we put -2 where ever the x is. This becomes:

7 + 4(8 - (-2))

We can simplify this to 7 + 4(10) because 8 - (-2) is 10, but you already know that! :)

Ok, so now we have 7 + 4(10). We must follow the order of operations to solve this now. The order of operations states we complete operations in the following order: parentheses, exponents, multiplying or dividing, adding or subtracting.

Since it said we should multiply before adding, this is what we must do to get the correct answer. When we multiply first, we get 7 + 40 = 47. And that's it!

If you have anymore questions, please come back here and ask!

There are lots of free video tutors on this website that may help you. It's sometimes easier to see someone doing it while explaining. Also, you can also find help in many YouTube videos.
