The first "modern rice", IR8 was produced in 1966 at the International Rice Research Institute which is based in the Philippines at the University of the Philippines' Los Banos site. IR8 was created through a cross between an Indonesian variety named "Peta" and a Chinese variety named "Dee Geo Woo Gen.

Today, most of the rice producing countries either use the IR8 or a better seed for the cultivation of rice. Except for a few in which the climatic conditions are not suitable for IR8.

This "type" of rice is popular since ages. Now scientists have experimented with a new type which is known as Golden Rice which will Vitamin A deficiency.
