In what ways is the earth a self-regulating complex system?

Does the earth exhibit complex behavior similar to a living organism?

It is odd though that one does consciously thank a living being for ones existence. I mean literally there are children who as adults thank their parents for their existence. This has been true since man has been a conscious and intelligent being. But if man is a creature of evolution. Then perhaps the first religious man would be one who recognized that he was part of all this preexistent life before man appeared on earth.
