This source seems the most likely to be reliable. NASA ought to know. Their page is from Nov 2007.

Satellites are tracked by United States Space Surveillance Network (SSN), which has been tracking every object in orbit over 10 cm in diameter since it was founded in 1957. There are approximately 560 satellites operating in Earth orbit, out of ~8,000 man-made objects in total. In its entire history, the SSN has tracked more than 26,000 space objects orbiting Earth. The majority of these have fallen into unstable orbits and incinerated during reentry. The SSN also keeps track which piece of space junk belongs to which country.

All in all, it depends on how you define satellite. There are millions of pieces of equipment rotating around the Earth and most sites list anywhere between 560-1500 Satellites revolving around the Earth. Here's a link to a pretty cool picture of Earth and has white dots around it signifying the debris/satellites/man made equipment being tracked by NASA:

The wisegeek page is inconsistent within itself and contradicted by the other site.
After looking at this varied list of answers it appears that the "powers that be" really don't want us to know.
There around 3000 usefull satellites around earth and nearly 6000 junk satellites revolving around earth.

There is a good chance that there is also some satellites around the Earth that are secret.

It depends how you define satellites: natural satellites, "artificial" satellites (ie., human-made, UFO's, etc.), or both natural and artificial satellites...
