According to the U.S. Census Bureau in the year 2003, Native Northamerican Indian population were 2.786.652 million, comprised in some 127 different tribes (from the Abenaki thru the Yurok indians tribes). A great portion of them lives in three states: California with 413.382, Arizona with 294.137 and Oklahoma with 279.559.
In the year 2006, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the State percentage of U.S. American Indian or Alaska Native population:
Alaska - 13.1%
New Mexico - 9.7%
South Dakota - 8.6%
Oklahoma - 6.8%
Montana - 6.3%
North Dakota - 5.2%
Arizona - 4.5%
Wyoming - 2.2%
Oregon - 1.8%
Washington - 1.5%
Nevada - 1.2%
Idaho - 1.1%
North Carolina - 1.1%
