Isaac Newton developed the Newton temperature scale around the year 1700. He did so by immersing a liquid-filled bulb into boiling water (pure), marking the "height" to which the liquid rose and assigning a top value of 33. Next he immersed the liquid-filled bulb into melting snow (clean), marked the "height" of the liquid, and assigned a bottom value of 0. He assumed a linear function and made equidistant divisions from 0 to 33.
