The North American tribes used Eagle feathers and feathers that were indigenous to the area. This was only in the war bonnet. Some tribes wore otter skin headdresses and they looked nothing like the ones on Westerns. In California they actually wore basket headdress and then there was the Roach Headdress that looked more like a mohawk in shape. These were often used in coming of age ceremonies for young warriors. No women were able to wear the Roach headdress.
The Aztec wore a head dress that fanned out across the back of the head and both men and women wore them. They were also adorned with gold and jewels to mark nobility.
