When Russia and the Ottomans fought, it was mostly on land. When they did do a navel encounter during the era of the Crimean war, the Russians defeated a Turkish fleet at Sinope by introducing the use of shell guns, but it didn't last long, because British and French ran to the aid of the Turks and forced Russia out of the Balkans and onto their side of the Black Sea.

Q: Did Russia need the Turkish ports?

A: Not really. She had enough ports in the northern Black Sea, but what she was worried about was free passage through the Bosphorous, so a common strategy at the time was to take some ports, then offer them back if granted some favour, in that case, they favour they wanted was free passage though the Bosphorous.

Well... the justification was that Russia had declared itself to be the protector of all Christian cathedrals and monuments within the Ottoman empire. The Ottomans were Muslim, so Russia had announced that there would be peace between them and the Ottomans insolong as the Ottomans respected the sanctity of Christian facilities in the Ottoman empire. That gave the Romanovs credibility among the Russian people for being strong leaders without there having to be an actual war.

But then one day the Ottomans did violate a Christian facility, and Russia was getting antsy about how their passage through the Bosphorous was not ensured, plus they had a new ship based shell-gun that they wanted to try, so they attacked the Ottoman navy in the Black sea, and won handily, but Britian and France rushed to the Ottoman's defense so quickly that it kind'a neutralized the early Russian gain.

Russia still had to depend on access to the world's oceans via St. Petersburg, and to keep up the hope of a rail line to Vladivostok.
