How can space-time have ten-dimensions? I only know X,Y,Z and t, four dimensions.

What do the extra six dimension describe? Why are they important to string theory?

You need to change the way your thinking of dimensions. Instead of trying envision it in your head as a graph, instead realize that each "dimension" is just a property of the object.

This is a pretty good explaination of 10 dimensions for the layman, watch part 1 and 2

Our human perception capacity is very limited so it is very hard to explain something that has yet to be experienced and cannot be measured in our current scientific standards.
