Gold nanoshells have been tested on cancers in dogs and mice. The nanoshells were taken up by cancer cells, and infrared lasers were then used to heat the nanoshells, destroying the cancer cells while leaving surrounding tissue intact. Human trials of nanoshell therapy have been proposed but are not yet under way.
