The main sources of Russian food import during 2004 were Brazil with 13.8 percentage, Ukraine 12.9 and Germany 7.3 percentage as the top three countries sharing a chunk of the total. During 2008, the former "bread basket" of the Soviet Union, the Ukraine, saw its compound annual growth rate (CAGR) rise at 16.3% with a value of 647.8 million Euros. So, we can now say that for the last years Ukraine has solved some of the food shortages in Russia (if somehow, such scenario ever existed during the last decade).
As of August 2008, the bakery sector in Eastern Europe and Russia was in a state of flux. Still, the Eastern European bakery sector was still small and fairly undeveloped compared with the rest of Europe. Eastern Europe's contribution to the continent's total bakery sales is barely in the double figures.
As the economies and currencies of Eastern Europe strengthen, the numbers are starting to catch up, however. The projection for the region's bakery will rise in value from 22.7 billion Euros in 2008 to 26.6 billion Euros projected by 2013, some 17% increase over five years. Already, the gains during this decade have been great.
