AGB stars can be found in just about any galaxy, since a large percentage of all stars (mass range about 0.6 to 10 suns) pass through the AGB stage during the course of their evolution.
S-process fusion operates in AGB stars, but the process begins with iron and gradually consumes the iron nuclei originally present in the star. AGB stars are not massive enough to synthesize new iron in their cores.
