The levator ani muscles (pubococcygeus, iliococcygeus, and puborectalis) form the pelvic floor and help to support the vagina. Of these, the pubococcygeus (PC muscle) is most directly associated with the vagina and is the primary target of Kegel exercises.

The vagina is surrounded by two layers of muscle (tunica muscularis), an external layer which is connected to the superficial muscle layer of the uterus, and an internal layer of circular muscle fibers. The bulbospongiosus (bulbocavernosus) muscle surrounds the distal end of the vagina. The levator ani muscles (pubococcygeus, iliococcygeus, and puborectalis) form the pelvic floor and help to support the vagina. Of these, the pubococcygeus (PC muscle) is most directly associated with the vagina and is the primary target of Kegel exercises.
