The Newport tower was built for Benedict Arnold in the mid 17th century.
However there are different hypothesis including Norse. Not noticing anything about it being a church. I've included the site with the information on the tower. Hope it helps :)

No. The Norse who explored the northeastern tip of North America were Pagan. And, they didn't work in stone or get that far south.
