there was a drought, so they couldnt grow corn, and some guy came buy and switched their calendar to december 2012 and they woke up and figured they should just die.

I highly doubt it. The most reasonable explanation would be various tribes taking over the city.

Corn depletes the soil. If you don't crop rotate corn, the soil will become depleted. Try it.

Warfare is the result of battles for resource. If food was the scarce resource then it would explain the fighting.
