The "Martian meteorite," officially named Allan Hills 84001 after its discovery site in the Allan Hills of Antarctica, is one of 34 meteorites thought to represent pieces of Mars that have been blasted into space by meteoroid impacts. The association with Mars is based on the unusual chemical and isotopic composition of these meteorites, which are unlike anything on Earth but are a good match for the composition of Mars.

The special significance of ALH 84001 as compared to other Martian meteorites is the possibility that it contains evidence of life. Both complex organic molecules and structures resembling fossilized bacteria have been found. However, the evidence is inconclusive and could be from contamination on Earth, or it may be the result of nonbiological processes.
