Catabolic and anabolic processes evolve but stayed separate.
-quote-
"1. Anabolic and Catabolic processes have not blended over 4 billion
years, but stayed separate. They have evolved to clear distinct
catabolic processes that in many cases would cause real harm if they
were blended with anabolic processes.
2. Catabolic processes seem to have evolved to include not only
breaking down molecules, but digestion, the immune system, and
excreting out waste. Many times these three pathways are related in
some way.
Remember
1. metabolism is catabolism or anabolism
2. the two types of metabolism, even though they are connected, have
remained somewhat separate, for evolutionary advantages.
3. the two bolster and support each other through a type of 'symbiotic
arms race' and may be the main driving force in evolution."
-end of quote-

Catabolic and anabolic are separate and they are never at equilibrium therefore they can evolve separately. No they don't have to remain constant for life survive. Everything in life changes. http://www.groupsrv.com/science/468290.html
