Saw someone's dash board covered in sea shells. Wouldn't that smell, especially with the warmer weather?

If the shells haven't been properly cleaned, that car will stink like a beach at low tide. I used to set shells out in the yard, in the shade, and let the ants and other insects clean them. After a couple of weeks, once the insects started leaving them alone, the shells were ready to bring indoors.
