We've had an infestation of roof rats... I wanted a trap that would work outside and not be problematic for cats or other animals. I found the Bucket Trap to work! It's very simple and cheap to build:

It avoids the poison issue, and peanut butter is better than cheese, because the mice can't just ease it off the trap.

If the mice don't have a commonly traveled path around your walls and corners, try putting a delicious mouse treat in a corner of a pantry or cabinet (somewhere your pets/kids won't get to) and putting down glue traps surrounding that corner.

No matter how smart, they shouldn't be able to get into the refrigerator. Food in cabinets may have to be kept in metal containers with lids. If you have food stored anywhere you wouldn't eat because rats might have gotten into it, get rid of it, unless any unopened packages deserve to be put in containers as above.

There nice and cheap and you can reuse them. The perfect mice catcher. If you don't feel like ordering one of those I would just call the animal control people.

Help! We have the smartest mice, we can't seem to trap them, anybody have any suggestions?
help! we have the smartest mice on the planet! we have tried glue traps, live traps and snap traps. they get the bait and leave. we have dogs and kids so poisons are out of the question. anyone have any suggestions? talked to exterminator and they told us to try the stuff we already have. we are considering naming them and calling them pets

• Awesome idea. You read and actually understood my problem and came up with a different solution other than something I had already tried

I recommend peanut-butter-baited standard spring-loaded traps (like the kind in cartoons), put in places your kids can't muck around with them. It avoids the poison issue, and peanut butter is better than cheese, because the mice can't just ease it off the trap.

we put peanut butter on all traps. they get the peanut butter off of the spring loaded traps without setting them off. i am totally baffled. we blow on them and they snap but a mouse eats off it and licks it clean, it stays set.

I like using glue traps because they are humane and usually the most successful. I don't put any bait in them, I just put them in places where I commonly see the mice running and it eventually catches one. Then I put the mouse & the trap it's stuck on in a box, pour cooking oil on it to make the glue stop sticking, and take the box far away and release it. If the mice don't have a commonly traveled path around your walls and corners, try putting a delicious mouse treat in a corner of a pantry or cabinet (somewhere your pets/kids won't get to) and putting down glue traps surrounding that corner.

they get off of the glue traps before we realize they were there. the only way we know that is you can see their footprints and fur in the glue. dont know how they are doing it its making me crazy. we are calling one of them gus-gus now. still thinking of names for the rest. :)

You may need to try more exterminators. Meanwhile, do you know what they eat, besides bait from traps? Whatever it is get rid of it - you don't want to eat what they've been gnawing on, and you certainly don't want to leave it there unless they pay for the buffet.

There are many ways you can trap them I suggest these: http://www.wildlifecontrolsupplies.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=WDC001&Product_Code=WDCMC01&Category_Code=WDCRT01
