Would you consider Avril Lavigne a rock (or punk) artist?

What genre would you classify her in? Why?

Are you a fan?

"Damn Cold Night" is rock. I like her music. One day my nephew uploaded a lot of his music files to my computer. I was listening (and hating) most of them. Then "Damn Cold Night" came on. I sat up and took notice. Who was this, I wondered? When I saw the movie Eragon I recognized her voice on one of the songs. That's Avril Lavigne I told my wife. Who? she asked. I owe the kid for this one.
Asker's Rating:
• Avril's great isn't she?

the song is actually called "I'm With You" - I love it too!
The song from Eragon is "Keep Holding On"
I'm glad to hear you like her!

Thanks. I googled it and it looked like the title was "Damn Cold Night" Just goes to show that you can't accept the first thing you see from Google at face value.

I consider Avril to be more of a rock than punk artist. Seems Wikipedia agrees with me:
"Avril Lavigne's music contains element mixed of alternative rock, teen pop, post-grunge punk and pop rock music."

But I'm telling you from my experience (which is the answer to your question WHY I would classify her in more rock than punk)...there are some Avril's songs that I adore like "When you're gone", "My happy ending", "Complicated" and so on. Believe me, if they were punk I wouldn't be listening to her. So yeah I'm a fan.

Hope this helped.

I'd say she's a post-pop artist, which is another way of saying that categories like rock, punk, pop, hiphop, etc, don't have any particular meaning anymore. Most artists today draw from a vide range of (music) experiences, and try to create their own recognizable style & sound.

It could all be jammed together as "pop", but then again, what does "pop" really means, other than "popular"..? By calling it "post-pop", I want to suggest that Avril Lavigne, and many more like her, are questioning common assumptions about identity and style, rather than fallin into any particular "slot".

Madonna was one of early pioneers here - she was punk and pop, simultaneously, and, at the same time, none of it, back in the 80's at the beginning of her career.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Avril, but I do like some of the music.

Here is another such post-pop artist, not so well known (yet)... how do you like Erika Rose:

Good voice, but I was not crazy about the music behind her.
