In 1971 he died of heart failure and was found in his bathtub in a Paris flat. Why he was found there with heart failure is unknown.
There is the theory that Pam (his girl friend) was doing heroin (which Jim hated) so she lied to him and told him it was coke (which Jim really liked) and he did too much and it killed him. I would say that's the most likely to happen, however there are a few more theories.
Most of these stories are kinda ridiculous but I will tell you anyway. The more common one in the news is about Jim OD'ing in The Rock and Roll Circus, a famous french nightclub on heroin he was buying for Pam. It is said that he was acting real down, bought Pam's heroin and then snorted it in the bathroom of the club, not knowing it was so strong, accidentally died and the dealers feared they would be caught by police so they dumped him in his tub in his apartment.
I have my own little theory that is sort of weird but I find that it could be likely. Towards the end of Jim's stay in America he was noted as having bad bronchitis and asthma but did not go to the doctor as he should of. To add to that, Jim fell from a balcony of a hotel and did nothing medically to help him. I think that these caused internal injuries or a blood clot which he never addressed. When Jim was found in Paris Pam said that he had his whole chest bloody like under the skin. People that were with him in his last days said he had a terrible cough. All of these combined make me think of a bronchitis or even a case of TB since it wasn't as well known or feared as it is now.
A theory that goes along with the fake death plot is that Jim was fed up with everything around him and his life and decided to plot or stage his death and Pam and all the people around him helped him with it. I do not think this is true because Pam died 3 years after Jim, I only think she died because Jim died and she was so upset and grief stricken over it all she could not take it anymore and decided to leave the earth and join him too.

"In Wonderland Avenue, Danny Sugerman discussed his encounter with Courson after she returned to the U.S. According to Sugerman's account, Courson stated that Morrison had died of a heroin overdose, having insufflated what Morrison believed to be cocaine. Sugerman added that Courson had given numerous contradictory versions of Morrison's death, at times saying that she had killed Morrison, or that his death was her fault. Courson's story of Morrison's unintentional ingestion of heroin, followed by accidental overdose, is supported by the confession of Alain Ronay, who has written that Morrison died of a hemorrhage after snorting Courson's heroin, and that Courson nodded off, leaving Morrison bleeding to death instead of phoning for medical help."

In the epilogue of No One Here Gets Out Alive, Hopkins and Sugerman write that Ronay and Agnès Varda say Courson lied to the police who responded at the death scene, and later in her deposition, telling them Morrison never took drugs.
"In the epilogue to No One Here Gets Out Alive, Hopkins says that 20 years after Morrison's death Ronay and Varda broke silence and gave this account: They arrived at the house shortly after Morrison's death and Courson said that she and Morrison had taken heroin after a night of drinking in bars. Morrison had been coughing badly, had gone to take a bath, and had thrown up blood. Courson said that he appeared to recover and that she then went to sleep. When she awoke sometime later Morrison was unresponsive and so she called for medical assistance."
Courson herself died of a heroin overdose three years later. Like Morrison, she was 27 years old at the time of her death.

It is pretty clear that drugs, aggravated by drinking, played a major part in his death.

According to Sam Bernett, a close friend of Morrison, he died of a massive heroin overdose in the toilet of a nightclub he was managing, the Rock 'n' Roll Circus on the French capital's fabled Left Bank.
Bernett, 62, a French-born former New York Times journalist, claims the death was then covered up by two drug dealers who transferred Morrison's body from the club to the singer's apartment and dumped it in the bath.
Bernett was then warned by the club's owners never to tell anybody about what he had seen.

• This was an entertaining answer. I like the way you mentioned several of the theories and came up with your own. The pictures are great.

The following is an explanation given 20 years after his death. Prior to that many conflicting story's emerged but were never proven. No autopsy was performed as the medical examiner in Paris found no evidence of foul play. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the epilogue of No One Here Gets Out Alive, Hopkins and Sugerman write that Ronay and Agnès Varda say Courson lied to the police who responded at the death scene, and later in her deposition, telling them Morrison never took drugs.

The police are reopening the case when Jim Morrison's close friend claimed that he died of accidental overdose of heroin and that drug dealers tried to cover it. But this is not yet confirmed because the authorities are still trying to investigate further. ---quote---
