Ten days? So much to see, so little time.
I have not traveled far down the east coast but I might be able to help with New England.
Traveling here for the first time Rhode Island has a lot to offer. Newport, RI is a great way to begin your trip. Plenty of great shopping, scenery and dining.

It would be hard to mention a trip to New England without saying Nantucket Island. A short ferry ride from Hyannis, Massachusetts to one of the best island destinations in the northeast,
Nantucket will never disappoint, seafood, shopping, beaches and scooter rentals.

In the Fall New Hampshire is one of the most beautiful places on the planet, so a trip through the White Mountain National Forest on the Kancamagus Highway and a stay in North Conway would definitely be in order.

Route 1 travels the coast of Maine and is worth the whole trip alone. From Kittery to Presque Isle the Maine coast is filled with shopping, scenery, beaches, lighthouses, dining, exploring and the best fresh lobster in the world.

When I think of back east during that time, I picture allergies, raking leaves and cracked lips. However, if you visit the 310, you will have 70 degree days, gorgeous sunsets, and Disneyland.

Planning an East Coast Car Trip... please help!
I would like to spend about 10 days touring the East Coast by car this coming fall and need some ideas, points of interest, and cool out of the way sights to see.
I'll be starting my trip from Mobile, AL.
I know I would like my first stop to be Savannah, GA.
I would also like to stop in Washington, DC and New York, but need pointers on fun, or off beat stuff to do there.
I am willing to travel as far north as time will allow, maybe even Maine.
I grew up on the West Coast and have covered quite a bit of terrain over there, but have yet to discover all of beauty of the East Coast, especially by car.

There are so many areas to cover, 10 days for the area you have won't nearly do it justice. Savannah is great, you can work your way up through the applications into the mid-atlantic states, DC has a ton of things to do like the Smithsonian's and the monuments etc., just up the road is Baltimore with a great inner harbor and Annapolis is beautiful. NYC can burn up the whole 10 days with things to do, as well a couple of days in Philly (independence hall etc). New England has a lot to offer, if you are up for Maine, Acadia National Park is one of my all time favorite areas, Boston has a lot of great historical areas, and Cape Cod is wonderful. Also, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket islands are really laid back and peaceful. Good luck, there is just a ton of things to do on this coast....

10 days is not enough time for that trip. I'd focus on 1 or 2 areas, so you could really enjoy them. Cape Cod, Marthas Vineyard, and Nantucket all benefit from off season rates in the fall, and are beautiful places to relax. New York City is the opposite during that time of year, with Broadway show openings, and everything getting back to full speed after the summer. If you do make it up to New england, I'd stop in Newport to do the Cliff Walk, and see the mansions-- stop in Providence for Italian food, then drive up to Boston. See the historical sites in the city, then head west to Minute Man National Park to experience where the Revolution began. Head north into tax free New Hampshire for shopping, stop in Portsmouth for more history...then head up the coast of Maine. Stop for lunch in Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, shop the outlets in Kittery and Freeport. Visit BAth, Brunswick, Camden, and Rockport...and then make sure you leave time for Acadia, with a hike up Cadillac mountain. If you get up there before dawn, you'll see the sunrise before anyone else in the country...as its the eastern most point in the U.S.

It's great to have this feedback. I think I'll focus more on the smaller cities and leave New York and DC to another trip all together. (it would take me at least 2 weeks for just those two cities) With cutting out the big distractions, it should leave more time for the sea shore and lobster! Yum!

Road trips are the best ! No matter which road you decide to travel on, my advice would be to get a membership with AAA just to be on the safe side. They offer free Trip-Tiks which is a map with your chosen route outlined, excellent roadside and towing service and discount coupons and tickets to tourist attractions along the way PLUS more. I've been a member you many years and have always gotten more than I paid for. We have needed the 100 mile towing benefit on two separate trips ! You just never know when you will be stuck in a traffic jam and run out of gas or overheat your engine or even just get a flat. It happens ! Have a great trip no matter where you go !

Ew, the East Coast. As a former native, I say you take 5 hours, fly out to Southern California and enjoy the fall out here. When I think of back east during that time, I picture allergies, raking leaves and cracked lips. However, if you visit the 310, you will have 70 degree days, gorgeous sunsets, and Disneyland.
