Where can I find good cheap food in London?

I've moved from Melbourne, Australia to London. In Melbourne, there is a place called Crossways (http://bit.ly/2luU7M) that serves really good vegetarian Indian food and is run by Hari Krishna followers. It is $6AUD for all you can eat and drink.

Is there something similar in London?

There is an almost exact equivalent in London, Govinda's Restaurant which is associated with a Krishna temple. It looks like it's part of the same group as Crossways.

However London is one of the most expensive cities in the world, so don't expect prices to work out the same!

The "authority" on eating out in London is the magazine Time Out, which has lots of restaurant reviews on its site, where you can find the best veggie restaurants, the best budget restaurants, recommendations for different types of cuisine etc.

EDIT:

Btw, don't forget London is enormously multicultural, and has a large number of people with Indian roots. As a result there are all kind of Indian restaurants, including many purely vegetarian ones, all over the place.

Depending on where you live, you might find good ones much closer to hand and much cheaper than Govinda's.

If you tell me what area you're in I might have some ideas.

I'm near Liverpool St Station, so very close to Brick Lane.

You're pretty central then.

Brick Lane itself is more of Bangladeshi community... nickname "Banglatown". However most of the "Indian" places round there should have decent and not too expensive veggie options on their menu.

You should probably also check out Drummond Street near Euston. There are quite a few good and cheap Indian places there, like the purely veggie Diwana Bhel Puri House.

Also you might want to check out Camden High Street and Eversholt Street. There are a variety of all-you-can eat and cheap restaurants around there, including vegetarian Indian ones, oriental ones with reasonable veggie choices etc.

If you want to explore further afield, for cheap, good, authentic Indian vegetarian food, check out places where those communities live, areas like Wembley, Tooting and Southall.

Good eating, and enjoy your time in London!

I can't believe I actually tracked this place down. First of all, London is expensive. Unless you eat street food (which can be very good - I had a crepe that hit the spot over by the London Bridge) it is challenging finding inexpensive food.

With that said, I did have a delightful meal in an historic Pub called Churchill Arms on Kensington Church Street in Kensington that serves Thai food. The Thai restaurant is located inside the Pub and is run separately from the pub itself. I was in London for just a few days and this was my go-to lunch spot because it was near our hotel. The portions are huge. I could get three meals out of one dish. Leftover Thai is divine.

I just found another link - this is a page that shows a list of restaurants with dishes at 15 pounds or under.

The London Eating site seems to have a lot of good info.
