Restaurant downtown or in the burbs?

It would cost us $2000 a month to rent space downtown in Spokane, for our restaurant. It would be near the shopping centers and theaters, though. We could rent a similar space in the suburbs for $800 per month. It is only 15 miles away. I'm thinking we could do much better downtown. What would you do?
Tip for best answer: M$0.00

If it was me, I would opt for downdown, every time!

There are far more opportunities to attract client into your restaurant if you have a busy location and the probable higher returns would then justify the higher rent.

Not knowing what the suburbs area you are thinking of is like, it is just the sound of this location that makes me think it would not be so profitable, after all, unless it was local trade, it is not really going to be that busy, surely? The suburbs of any city is not really the place people look at when choosing a restaurant to visit.

If you have a passing trade downtown, there are any number of ways to attract customers into your restaurant, once they are there, you can get them to return with special offers, free bottle of wine, that sort of thing.

If you are going to do it, do it big! Good luck!

Downtown would be the ideal spot, with a much better flow of foot traffic being ushered past your restaurant. But depending on what type of restaurant you are (Italian, seafood, comfort food, etc.), a suburban location might suit you just fine. Locals might find it to be a nice spot to go if they're not willing to head downtown. If your restaurant is going to be more cutting edge and trendy, like a sushi spot, then you will most likely only thrive in a city setting.

Ultimately, the decision is up to you. It really depends on the type of restaurant it is that you are moving forward with. But no matter what location you decide upon, remember to constantly promote your place of business. It's the only way to be successful, no matter where you decide.
