Researching ideas for a Hawaii vacation. Planning on visiting Kauai and the Big Island. Any suggestions?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Aloha Ka Ka hiaka! Hele mai to the Big Island of Hawaii which has a live volcano erupting red hot lava into the Pacific Ocean. We say the local food is " ono " so try a plate lunch or a luau...for some ono food. Most major airlines have package deals which are affordable and convenient. Hilo, which is the home of Big Island Candies, which are wonderful to take home as gifts. Kona has deep sea fishing, snorkeling, wineries and Kona Coffee, the best grown coffee in the USA. Kauai is quiet, green and reminiscent of Hawaii 20 years ago. Hurry up to get to Kauai to slow down to a slow enjoyable pace.

Don't forget Maui is No Ka Oi (the best) where there are 54 Bridges to Hana Town and the sunrise at Mount Haleakala is breathtaking, but cold. Maui is home to Shane Victorino, of the Philadelphia Phillies. Maui is the windsurfing capital of the US and is becoming a " green community ".
Oahu is the gathering place, big city feel with tropical flair, get restaurants, Waikiki of course, the hustle and bustle...where you can surf near Diamond Head and shop at one of the biggest shopping centers in the world, Ala Moana Shopping Center.

Hawaii has many bargains to offer in hotel rates, rent a car, two for one meals, luau shows, snorkeling. Reminder, whales only come to the islands during the winter...other times of the year, you can see green sea turtles and dolphins.

I have plenty of suggestions for the Big Island...

If you're not staying in one of the resort hotels (Waikoloa, Mauna Kea, Hapuna Prince), you'll probably want to find a place in/near Kona.

Avoid Hilo.

If you plan to go to the volcano, plan to dress for cold weather (bring jackets). It's a good day trip.

Recognize that, when you're landing on the Big Island, it's like landing on the moon. The island is beautiful... and has lots of volcanic rock. There IS vegetation on the island! Don't let the flight in discourage you.

If you want detailed information, submit another question and offer a larger tip. I would be willing to give more time to this answer for more than a Mahalo quarter.
