I looked at above information too. I am not sure what percentage of New York CIty numbers would apply to Manhattan

Can you define the difference between rental, housing, and owner please?

The source of the data was the census data. Here are the definitions the census website provides: (http://factfinder.census.gov/home/en/epss/glossary_a.html)

Owner-occupied housing unit
A housing unit is owner occupied if the owner or co-owner lives in the unit even if it is mortgaged or not fully paid for.

Renter-occupied housing unit (Although the number provided above includes vacant)
All occupied units which are not owner occupied, whether they are rented for cash rent or occupied without payment of cash rent, are classified as renter-occupied.

Housing unit
A house, an apartment, a mobile home or trailer, a group of rooms, or a single room occupied as separate living quarters, or if vacant, intended for occupancy as separate living quarters. Separate living quarters are those in which the occupants live separately from any other individuals in the building and which have direct access from outside the building or through a common hall. For vacant units, the criteria of separateness and direct access are applied to the intended occupants whenever possible.

Housing includes both rental and owner.
Rental units are units rented to other people
Owner units is where the owner of the property lives in the unit or the owner sells it.

Warburg Realty estimates the total number of residential units available for rent in Manhattan as 610,000. ( first link)
Assuming an average of about 150 rental units per building you would be looking at about 4,000 rental buildings . Not sure about this number, kind of estimated it from some numbers in 4th link

Source (2)
Census Survey Indicates 1188889 as total population living in rental units in Manhattan(second link). Average of 2 people per household (third link) - You get to a similar number about 600,000 rental units

As of 2006, there were 840,443 housing units with 23.5% home ownership rate (http://furmancenter.org/files/soc2007/Manhattan_000.pdf). This translates to roughly 200,000 owned units, and 640,500 units for rent. With a rental vacancy rate of 3.2%, that is 6320 units on the market at any given time. The report referenced breaks it down by bourogh also.

If your bored and want more stats, here's a bunch.
